An inferior cowhide will often have a chemical odor, is stiffer, has a duller coat, and often has an asymmetrical shape.

Using chromium tanning to create a superior white cowhide rugs is an expensive process; theres no way of getting around it. So if you are offered a deal on inexpensive cowhides, beware: they were produced with an inferior tanning process, and in time, your customers will know the difference.
